Translator: Shahad AlMakhlafi Checker: nora fawzy I would like to talk to you today about a topic that many people have been talking about for a very long time! The title of the topic is “Success.” Success means different concepts for different people, but what it means to me may be different from what it means to you. And what it might mean to you is different from what it means to a kindergarten kid trying to get a star for homework or maybe a housewife trying to get her five kids on their beds at 9 p.m. Or even an executive who has worked for his/her company for over 20 years and just wants to become the CEO of the company. As you can tell, we have many definitions of the word success, but the greatest definition I can give you today, is "success is self-expression" about who you want to be, doing what you want and going where you want to.
Because when it comes to your life, you are the boss so you have a choice. In fact, you are who you are today because of all the choices you've made in your life. But as we grow up, we have a lot of people trying to tell us how to make these choices our parents, our teachers, our bosses, our friends even our neighbors. They try to tell us how to live our lives, what to do, where to go, and how to walk and talk.
But my question to you is, if you tried to be what others want, who would you be? The key to success is to stop being bound by their expectations and start performing according to your own level of expectations, which is believing in yourself and knowing that what you want in the end will come true as long as you believe in it. As you can see, you must have faith and faith is knowing that what you want will come true as long as you believe in it. And if you strengthen your faith, you will often find that your fears have vanished because if you believe in yourself, everyone in the world will believe in you.
Fortunately I didn't believe in myself for long and in fact I used to be the one that mothers often warn their daughters about and that fathers tell their sons about: If you keep doing what Daniel does, you'll end up where he went. And they were honest in some of what they said because as you can imagine, your reputation really is your best advertisement. In fact, I did not have a good reputation; Because I was living far below my means and in my mother's basement. At the age of 21, I had worked in more than 40 jobs. More jobs were fired than people were fired. In high school, I graduated before the last, and the last was in prison. I was a drug addict for 8 years, I was restless, broke, loser and disgusting, and I understood then that I wanted to change, the only problem was that I don't know how? Can I see hands if you've been through a situation where you want to change but don't know what to do? Well, we've all been through that and we're probably still there now.
I discovered that there are three ways to make a change in my life. And I want to share with you today three ideas that, from today, can revolutionize your lives. I know that these steps work because I was able to do them myself. At the age of 24 I became a self-made millionaire, I was able to write three books and travel to dozens of countries and now I reach millions of people with my work. I believe these three principles can change your life, no matter how you define success. Whether you want to live to the age of 100 or have twelve children, or have a house on the top of a mountain in a place that no one knows.
These three principles will help you achieve success in your life. The first is to read more books. All books can help us solve all the problems in the world. But the truth is that we don't need to read all the books in the world, because we don't have all the world's problems, but we need to read books that will help us solve our problems.
For example, if you want to learn about money, it is better for you to read books about money. Or if you want to learn how to manage your relationships, or become a better communicator, there are many books on that. Basically what I'm saying is that there are libraries paved with gold, and the library card is free. Books are the tools that unleash your mind. Leaders are readers. So if you want to succeed you have to read. Most people in the world read one book in one year, and I suppose that book is Facebook. Even before they get up and do their work, before they drink their coffee or read their newspaper, they look at Facebook. But if you study different things, you will get different results, and you will become what you study. What do you study and where does it take you? Lots of people come to me and say, "Daniel, I don't have time to read, I have kids, I have a job, I'm a student, I have a lot of textbooks, I work on a lot of things or I'm too busy." But if you don't have 10 minutes a day, you say you don't have a life.
We all have time to read, we have time to pick a good book and read for ourselves so we can learn. If you read for 10 minutes a day for a month, that's one book a month. A book a month, and within 12 months equals 12 books a year. You can do in one year what most do in five years. And she talks about not having time, we all have time to read. And remember, readers are leaders, the only way to succeed is to read. My second suggestion is to win over the best people around you. We are a group of five people whom we surround ourselves with the most. We earn the same income, we go to the same places, we do the same things, we think the same things.
If you look at your five closest friends, you will ask yourself this one question: "Who are my leaders and where are they taking me?" In other words, "Do they take me where I want to be?" If the answer is no, you need new leaders. You need inspiring people who can help you and lift you to goals that are beyond your means and your thinking. You have to know your goals and you can do that by surrounding yourself with the right people. Many of us have what I like to call virtual friends and they are the ones we see around the neighborhood, at the grocery store, at the gym, at the mall, at church, at work, and everywhere we go. Naturally, these people are friends when we gain their trust and approval. And what happens is if you are a very ambitious person, and you have very high goals, a lot of them can help you reach your goals. If you need to look abroad for people. I'll give you an example, I had a friend named John who was a plumber, and he and his dad had a very successful business, at least that's what it looked like.
I asked John, "I want to start a project, so what do you think I should do?" He pulled me into the corner and said, "Daniel, I don't think you want to start a business, because 98 percent of businesses fail within the first three years." And he started by telling me the reasons why I couldn't and how it wouldn't work. He told me how hard working more than 100 hours a week was, how hard it was to manage his payroll, and why the recession kept him from getting more clients. When he told me I was a little disappointed and sad, then I went home and thought about it. And when I went to my diary, I said, "98% of the stats are fake" including this one, you should realize that someone's opinion of you is not your reality. In order to change your reality, you need to change your thinking and the people around you.
You need to surround yourself with those who will help you , who are smarter and who are more advanced than you, and they know what you need to do to get to the next level. The truth is that whoever you are looking for, they are also looking for you but you must find them. Sometimes we surround ourselves with strangers and family members who tell us what we can't do that bind us. Many people have good intentions, but often contain wrong directions. In other words, they want to help us but don't know how. So surround yourself with someone who knows. Many ask me, "How do you find these, Daniel?" it is easy. If you follow the first step i.e. read more books, you will find that at the back of the book there is an "About the Author" section. And what I'm used to is getting access to the authors. We are now living in the new millennium, thank God, which allows us to reach them through their sites and social media, so that we can talk to them. Where we can change by understanding what they teach.
And if we ask enough we will create great progress in our lives. And remember that those you are looking for are also looking for you, so surround yourself with them. My last suggestion is to set higher goals; Because goals make you work, they help you become more of who you are. In the light of this development, many do not know how to set goals, and remain at a loss about the method. Many people make New Year's resolutions, but the problem with these resolutions is that sometimes a person tries to do many things in too little time. Let's say Doug wants to stop smoking. On December 31st he said, "I stopped it," and January 1st he said, "I'm clean, and I'm not going back." He did not make a plan to achieve his goals, and therefore it is not reasonable. Another thing people do is a list full of goals, and usually when a person makes a list, he gives himself more time and there is no rush, and most of the time he does not write down his goals.
So, what do you suggest? Well, I'm glad you asked. What I suggest to you is that you write down your goals. I believe that you must think on paper, and in order to stimulate your subconscious mind, you must write down your goals. Then you can carry on steadily to what you will be. I have this method and I study it all over the world, and it's called the Twenty Idea method . What you would do originally is choose one overarching goal that you would like to accomplish, and then analyze the twenty ideas according to the specific goal. Say, for example, that you wanted to become a better public speaker , what are the things that you can do? Maybe watching TED talks like you do now, you can practice your speech , look in the mirror to challenge yourself, or read the dictionary every day.
There is a lot to do but can I come up with twenty ideas? The answer is yes, and I can come up with 100 if you want. Imagine if you did this in every aspect of your life, financially, for the sake of promotions and your family as you wrote down your goals daily. You will be able to achieve a lot in your life. We have everything we need to succeed, but we must use what we have to get a lot of what we want, from the cars we drive, to the clothes we wear, the food we eat, to the people we meet. Under this diversity, we have what we need to succeed.
